A new initiative to recycle old batteries is being promoted in Falmouth in the hope that it will become part of the kerbside recycling service.
Members of the Falmouth Residents Association have come together to place recycling containers in both The Moor and Boslowick post offices, as a way to encourage people to dispose of their old batteries this way rather than putting them in the bin.
Elizabeth Hewlett, association secretary said that the idea originally came from hearing that residents in Portscatho had mounted up a similar scheme, something with the Residents Association wanted to try out in Falmouth.
She added: “It has been in the post office for a few days and its already quite full, so I think it is going to be a success. There is also another one at Boslowick.”
Mrs Hewlett said that once the batteries are collected from the post offices, they will be picked up by two volunteers and taken to SITA’s recycling plant at United Downs in St Day.
Funding for the scheme has been supplied by Falmouth town council, who, together with the Falmouth Residents Association, are using the initiative to “spur on” Carrick district council to take up battery recycling.
Mike Varney, town mayor, said: “I just think it is a fantastic initiative and I know the town council and myself are extremely delighted to support something like this.”
The move to recycle batteries comes during ‘Climate Friendly Fortnight’, where a number of events will be held across Cornwall to highlight the importance of the environment, until Sunday, September 28.
