Falmouth florist raises £150 for Breast Cancer

A Falmouth florist has raised £150 for breast cancer charities after holding a competition to guess the name of the mannequin in her shop window.

Jackie Phillips, who owns Jackie Phillips Flowers on The Moor, dressed her shop window in pink in support of Interflora’s fundraising partnership with Breast Cancer Care.

She also asked town mayor Mike Varney to name the mannequin as part of an effort to raise money for the Mermaid Centre in Truro, a support group for women with Breast Cancer.

Mrs Phillips said: “We have been supporting the Interflora fundraising for the last three years and have been donating money. I have been involved with the Mermaid Centre since I had a problem at the beginning of this year. I thought it would be good for us to give money to something local.”

Cllr Varney chose the name ‘Samantha’ for the mannequin, but since this was not among those submitted by the public, they were put into a hat, with the first name to be drawn out receiving the prize of a pink bouquet of roses and lilies.

The first name drawn out was ‘Gertrude’, from Falmouth resident Chris Eva. His prize was accepted by friend Jill Hosen on his behalf.

Cllr Varney said: “I just think it is fantastic that we have got a wonderful shop that contributes to helping raise money for all the local communities and especially something like cancer research. I am delighted to support any initiative like this.”

Of the money raised, £50 will go to Interflora for Breast Cancer Care, while £100 will be donated to the Mermaid Appeal Trust.
