Penryn Athletic pulled off the shock of the Throgmorton Cup third round by beating South West Peninsula Premier side Tavistock away.

Hit by injury, Athletic made the 70 mile trip to Devon in midweek more in hope than expectation.

They made five changes to the side that beat Goldolphin Atlantic last Saturday.

Oliver Moody and David Blizzard were just two of the youngsters called up from the second team to play as wing-backs in a 5-3-2 formation.

The settled in well with the senior players to put in an excellent performance which was well deserving of the 2-0 scoreline.

Tavistock started the brighter of the two sides but after 20 minutes any nerves that the visitors had of playing against Premier opposition dissapeared as the went on the attack.

Shaun Johnston was first to fire at goal but his shot was blocked by an opposition defender.

Johnston then combined with Scoley to set up Pullen before Hal Davis and Blizzard linked up in a sweeping move down the left to present Pullen with another chance which was blocked.

Andy Meeds then made an important saved from Pat Shaughnessy as the visitors defied the league standings and put the home side on the back foot.

Shaughnessy then sent Pullen clear-on goal but the Tavy keeper was again equal to the task saving from point-blank range as Penryn finished the half on top.

In the second 45 Tavy found it difficult to turn the Penryn defence who were performing well in their 5-3-2 sweeper formation.

Therefore they brought on the highly-rated Glynn Hobbs to try and change the flow of the game.

However, it wasn’t until 65 minutes that the hosts carved out their first opening with Hobbs firing a pacey shot past the post.

Hobbs then turned provider as he set up Southgate but Raven was sharply off his line and gathered the ball safely. Robert Hosking then came off the Penryn bench to replace Jewell, before the visitors took a deserved lead in the 78th minute.

Athletic broke down the left before the ball was worked across the box to Shaughnessy who rifled a shot in the upright from 18 yards.

The goal looked as though it might be enough to see Penryn through as their defence were still performing well. However, the result was put beyond doubt three minutes later when Pullen played the ball to substitute Hosking who crossed the ball to Blizzard on the edge of the area. He then hit a powerful shot which went in off the underside of the bar.

Athletic, who have now won eight out of their last nine, will welcome Godolphin Atlantic back to Kernick on Saturday having beaten them 2-1 in the Westinsure Cornwall Senior Cup recently. On Boxing Day there is a match with Truro City Res which has been switched to an 11am kick-off.
