Truro City’s good run in the BGB Southern League Division One (south and west) continued at the weekend as they won 4-2 away at Gosport to maintain their 100 per cent record in 2009.

The result keeps City hot on the heels of Windsor and Eton who sit three points ahead of them in the table.

The Cornishmen started the game at Gosport brightly and spent the opening minutes camped on the edge of the opposition’s area with Stewart Yetton, Andy Taylor and Joe Broad all going close to opening the scoring.

However, it was the home side who took the lead as on the 13 minute as misfortune struck Truro’s keeper Martin Rice as he made a hash of clearing allowing Andy Puckett the easiest of finishes.

Truro then piled forward again and got their reward when Matt Hockley’s shot was deflected into the path of Stewart Yetton who hit the ball across the keeper from six yards out.

Puckett then went from hero to villain for the home side when following a tussle just inside the Truro half the Boro' striker aimed a head butt at Tom Smith and the referee dismissed him with a straight red.

City made this one-man advantage tell in the second half by scoring two quick fire goals from Andy Taylor, the first he fired in from ten yards and then the second was from close range as Yetton’s effort was parried by Nick Hutchings.

However, Gosport hit back and when Graham Lindsey shot in off the post the home side began to assert some pressure on the visitors.

In a break away move Andy Watkins had a good shot saved by Hutchings while at the other end the visitors felt aggrieved that they didn’t get a penalty when it appeared that Jake Ash had handled in the box. However, the game was put beyond doubt when City’s substitute Liam Eddy came of the bench to score for the second week in a row. He ran onto Barry McConnell’s long ball up field and fired past Hutchings.

PENRYN ATH 3 TRURO CITY 2 Truro City Reserves battled back from 3-0 down to almost force extra-time in their Cornwall Senior Cup Quarter Final with Penryn.

On 15 minutes Penryn got the breakthrough when Matt McIlroy had a shot kicked off the line from a Will Scoley corner. However, the clearance only fell as far as Pat Shaughnessy who, on the edge of the box, took a touch to control the ball before firing it through a crowd of players and into the back of the net.

At this stage it was all Penryn and they made their dominance show when Sean Johnston exchanged passes with David Blizzard down the right before cutting in field, beating a couple of defenders and firing an unstoppable shot into the top right hand corner of City’s net.

At this stage Truro looked as though they could be in for a very long and demoralising afternoon at Kernick.

And this was further compelled when joint-player manager Dale Band sped forward from midfield. He worked his way into the box but as he drifted wide of the goal a rash challenge from keeper Ryan Ball sent him tumbling to the ground and gave Penryn a penalty, which Hal Davis confidently smashed in for 3-0.

Had the scoreline stayed that way for the remainder of the half Penryn would have strolled into the semi finals but having just received a fortunate spot kick, the home side returned the favour when Pete Davey pushed Chris Lett over in the box allowing Tom Ball to fire home from 12 yards. This gave the visitors a chance to get back into the game in the second half. They took that opportunity when a Hal Davis’ back pass was intercepted by Josh Sims. The Truro captain then rounded keeper Steve Raven before squeezing his shot in from a narrow angle to put the game back in the balance.

With ten minutes to go Truro gave Athletic a scare when Raven hit a ball up field, which only reached half way. With the goal unguarded, Sims then had a dip at goal and as his lob bounced in the home box the home crowd were relieved to see it just go over.
