PENRYN Athletic recorded their seventh straight win with this victory over Vospers Oak Villa in Plymouth.

It ended a good week for the side which saw them consolidate their fifth position in the league following a 2-1 over Foxhole Stars last Wednesday.

The match with Vospers was not one of free flowing football as it was played on a run down Western Mill ground which fell below league standards.

Both sides struggled to pass the ball around and reverted to hitting it into the box early to try and get a result. One such move resulted in the first chance of the match when Cornwall Under-18 player David Blizzard crossed to the far post for Gregg Hobbs to head the ball just wide. The reliable Hal Davis then came to the visitors rescue moments later when he took the ball off Paul Simpson as he was about to shoot from the corner of the six-yard box.

Pat Shaughnessy then hit a free kick which Paul Pethick scrambled away for a corner before Simpson hit a shot over the bar.

Disappointed with their first half showing Athletic then brought on Dale Band and Sean Johnson to see if the could change things and six minutes into the second half the visitors had the lead. Will Scoley hit a Shaughnessy cross goalwards that Pethick scrambled clear, however Penryn then recycled the ball with Shaughnessy beating his man and cutting the ball back from the by-line for Pete Davey to force home from six yard out.

Athletic then sensed more goals and ten minutes later they had got the all important second goal.

Blizzard headed a cross back into the danger area where Darren Edwards knocked the ball down for Hobbs who surged onto the ball sweeping past the last defender top hit a shot wide of Pethick’s left hand and into the back of the net from 18 yards.

However, the game was not finished then as five minutes later Villa pulled a goal back. Substitute Oli Deadman’s long throw reached the near post but with players in front of him Raven could only punch clear and the ball fell to James Gill who sent the ball back inside the far post.

Raven then made amends for his mistake moments later when Craig Wassall was sent clear and he made and excellent one on one save.

However, that was to be Villa’s best chance of an equaliser and Athletic held on for all three points to stay fifth in the Carlsberg South West Peninsula League Division One (west) table.

PENRYN ATHLETIC 2 Foxholse Stars 1 Penryn Athletic kept up their good form in the Carlsberg South West Peninsula League division one (west) with victory over high flying Foxhole Stars at Kernick last Saturday.

The game was decided by a series of penalty kicks two of which went to Athletic and one to Foxhole. However, despite losing Billy Davies’ team put in a powerful all action display and were unlucky not to come away with a point.

Dale Band created the first real chance for Athletic when he made a jinking run to to slide the ball to Pete MacLean, who sent in a near post shot which Ryan Holland was forced to save.

The turning point came around the 30 minute when having already been booked for dissent Mark Rowe too much to the referee again following an unfavourable decision and was shown a second yellow.

Ten minutes later and the home side were in front when MacLean got possession of the ball inside the area and full back Jason Warne made a clumsy challenge having got the wrong side of play. Hal Davis stepped up and smashed in the spot kick.

Athletic pressed forward to finish the job but were playing too many passes and Foxhole began to take the control. On 66 minutes the visitors thought they had levelled when Matt Holland’s cross was headed in by Aiden Rundle only for the goal to be disallowed for a foul.

However, four minutes later the referee blew up in the favour as Rundle was pushed in the back by Raven as a cross came in. Warne stepped up to level the score.

PatShaughnessy, Chris davey and Darren Edwards were then all sent on to lift the side’s flagging fortune. It was Shaughnessy who got into the action as he squared the ball across the danger area to Band in the middle. However, before Penryn joint player-manager could shoot he was upended by Adam Holloway allowing Hal Davis to score his seventh successful penalty of the season and give the home side the points.
