A year’s worth of fundraising at Falmouth’s Pendennis Shipyard has resulted in a cheque for just over £3,650 being presented to a children’s charity.

Emma Lloyd from the Precious Lives Appeal, run by Children’s Hospice South West, was presented with the cheque at the shipyard.

The money was raised by members of the social and charity committee running events throughout last year, including raffles and bowling nights, as well as arranging collections of ink cartridges, stamps and jewellery.

A guest speaker’s appearance by the company’s managing director Henk Wiekens, at the Plymouth Professionals Breakfast Club, raised £600 alone, with 150 business people donating £5 each to hear him.

Diana Dawson, a member of Pendennis’ charity committee said: “We chose the Precious Lives Appeal as our charity of the year for 2008 without hesitation. The need for this kind of specialist support for children and their family’s in Cornwall and the Plymouth area is vital. Everyone at Pendennis was proud of the total that we managed to raise.”

She thanked the company’s supplier base, which donated many of the raffle prizes throughout the year.

“Without their generosity we would not have been able to raise as much money as we did,” she added.

Emma Lloyd, Children’s Hospice South West’s head of fundraising in the west, said: “On behalf of all the families with life-limited children in Plymouth and Cornwall who will benefit from having a children’s hospice closer to home I would like to thank Pendennis for all their support. The money they have raised will go towards the Precious Lives Appeal, helping us to turn the dream of building Little Harbour, in Porthpean, into a reality.”
