Falmouth police host Flava dance workshop

Falmouth and Penryn’s police officers are more used to walking the beat than dancing to it, but for the last two days they have hosted hip hop dance troupe Flava.

The Penzance-based semi-finalists from last-year’s ITV1 Britain's Got Talent, have been working with officers and around 100 youngsters from Falmouth School and Penryn College in a two-day dance workshop.

The aim of the B Inspired workshop, which started at the Dracaena Centre yesterday on Saturday and finished yesterday, was to help with the youngsters’ confidence.

The pupils, all aged between 11 and 18, were taught routines focussing on bullying, which were accompanied with a discussion around the impact it has on people and how it made people feel.

They were then told about activities that were available in the area and were given the chance to tell police officers what they would like have available to them.

At the end of yesterday’s session everything they had learned was put into a dance routine for parents and carers Sergeant Cara Trott from Falmouth police station said: “Young people can achieve so much if they are given the right opportunities. This workshop is a chance for them to feel part of something fun and worthwhile, while becoming more confident at the same time.

“We hope that Flava will inspire young people to follow their dream, whether it is to dance, play sport or take part in any other activity.”

Flava has recently received a Philip Lawrence honorary award for “outstanding contribution to the community.”

The police ran the workshop jointly with Falmouth and Penryn Extended Services, Carrick Housing, Cornwall Council and Cornwall Community Safety Partnership.

It was sponsored by Westcountry Fruit, Tesco and Lidl, who provided refreshments for those taking part.

The workshop was one of a series taking place across Cornwall and Devon and more are planned for Truro and Plymouth later in the year.
