A historic landmark of Mylor Bridge has been stolen from the spot where it stood for over 200 years.
The water pump on Comfort Road, part of the original water supply for people in that area, was raised from the ground some time over the weekend of June 27 and 28. Police suspected that it was taken in daylight hours and because of its size would have taken at least two people to lift and fit into a trailer.
Mylor and Flushing parish council chairman Tony Andrews said: “I am shocked and devastated by this theft, this is a crime against all the residents of the parish. I hope the item is returned and those responsible are brought to justice.
“The pump is a part of the village and to see the site desecrated breaks my heart.”
Part of the village’s heritage, neighbourhood beat manager Charlie Staines said that one person who lives near the pump was crying when she noticed it had gone.
He added: “I could not believe what I was being told when the chairman of the parish council called me, who would steal such an item from our village?
“I went straight to Comfort Road to see it with my own eyes, I had to comfort and reassure many of the residents as they were clearly distressed by this incident.
“On the many foot patrols I conduct around the village I constantly enjoy the beauty of these pumps and they are what makes Mylor Bridge such a special village.
I would ask the residents to think back and consider if they saw anything suspicious around the pump in Comfort Road.”
