Tributes paid to Falmouth man after horrific road crash

Tributes and flowers were left at the scene of a tragic road accident that caused the death this week of a popular 22-year-old Falmouth man.

Christian Vinnicombe died at the wheel of his Volkswagen Golf as he was travelling towards Helston on Sunday evening.

Three other vehicles were involved leaving two people seriously injured. The driver of one was arrested the next day in Helston on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He has been bailed until November 3.

Yesterday, a second driver was arrested and, when the Packet went to press, was waiting to be interviewed by police.

Inspector Matt Shaw from the Camborne traffic unit, said that the crash scene looked a mess, with debris from the cars scattered along a quarter-of-a-mile stretch of road.

Insp Shaw said: “All four drivers were travelling in convoy from Falmouth towards Helston and we haven’t ruled out the possibility that they had been racing. There were other cars on the road at the time and the witnesses suggested that there was considerable speed involved.”

A former pupil of Falmouth School, Christian was known to his friends as Chan, a name he had sprayed on the bonnet of his car.

He was about to finish a four-year apprenticeship at Pendennis Shipyard, in Falmouth, where his death was a shock to colleagues this week.

On Monday, a group of friends gathered at the scene of the crash at Carnebone to say goodbye to Christian. Despite the appalling weather, there was a steady stream of people paying their respects as police continued to investigate the accident.

One tribute at the crash scene said: “Such a young life snatched away. You will always be with your friends in their memories. And memories can never be taken away.”

Another said: “The world is a sadder place without you.”

Christian’s twin brother Tom, also a former Falmouth School pupil, and friends have left a number of tributes on a social networking page called “Chan’s the Man.”

See today's Packet for more details of the crash and tributes that have been made to Christian.
