PENRYN Athletic’s difficult start to the season continued when the fell to a 2-0 defeat at Newquay on Saturday.

Before the game their was a minute’s applause for Brian Biggin, a highly regarded member of Cornish football and Newquay FC, who died last Tuesday, see report page 59.

On an unusually good service at Mount Wise, Penryn started well -looking to put an opening day defeat to Perranporth behind them.

Mark Goldsworthy broke clear but, as Luke Payne came off his line, the former Helston and Truro City striker placed his shot the wrong side of the post.

Steve Raven was then forced into a couple of saves at the other end as Scott Palmer and Paul Hampshire both fired in shots.

Newquay then took the lead in the 26th minute when Paul Robertson broke clear. Raven closed his shot down but the ball then ballooned up in the air and Robinson found himself in possession on the corner of the six yards box. He cleverly waited for support before chipping the ball to the back post for Shaun Middleton to nod home.

Pat Shaughnessy then had a good shot saved by Payne before Newquay added a second. Martin Day and Chris Davey both missed chances to tackle Luke Rigby on the right which allowed to him to cross for Robertson to shoot past Raven.

Five minutes into the second half and Athletic should have been back in the game as former Penryn player Ashley Bradshaw handled a Will Scoley cross inside the box.

Bradshaw was booked for his protest but the penalty decision was not to matter as the usually reliable Hal Davis smacked his effort against the crossbar.

From there Athletic still had plenty of the game but couldn’t create any clear cut chances leaving them on the end of their second defeat in a row without having scored a goal so far.

PENRYN ATHletic SECONDS 3 Holmans 0 A good performance from Penryn saw them move into second-spot behind rivals Helston following a 3-0 win over Holmans.

The scoreline could have been greater with the woodwork and keeper saving the visitors on numerous occasions.

Jason Roberts and Adam Pryor came close to opening the scoring early with a shot being saved by Bachelor in the home goal and the other being cleared off the line.

Pryor then rattled the woodwork as the home side continued to press.

They were rewarded when Nathan Grimshaw played the ball to Lawrie Magowan, who passed to Andy Trathan to fire in.

Magowan then turned provider again when he floated a free kick to the near post. Pryor had lost his marker well and found himself in a good position to plant header past the wrong-footed keeper who was expecting a cross to the back post.

Keeper Chris Symons then got an assist as he played a free kick to Oli Moody to score from inside the area.
