On Sunday the choir sang in St Michael’s Church, Helston in a Remembrance Sunday concert with the Helston Town Band. The concert was organised by the Helston branch of the Royal British Legion.

The choir was conducted by Musical Director, Elaine Tangye and accompanied by regular pianist, George Smith.

The programme of songs was in two parts, each varied and well contrasted. The first part comprised the hymns “Rachie” (For the brave and loyal, Neath His banner bold) and “Gwahoddiad” (I hear Thy welcome voice that calls me, Lord, to Thee); “Goin Home” (William Fisher’s words; music from Dvoák’s symphony From the New World); Janaek’s unaccompanied “True Love” and “A Roman War Song” from Wagner’s opera Rienze. The second group of songs, even more appropriate to Remembrance Sunday and preceded by a reading of the poem In Flanders Fields, began with Sammes’ setting of Laurence Binyon’s “For the Fallen”. Next were the unaccompanied “Close Thine Eyes” (words said to be by King Charles I), “The Lord’s Prayer” (to music by AH Malotte), and “Morte Criste.” Finally, choir and audience were accompanied by the band in singing “O Valiant Hearts.”

Chairman of the concert was Rebecca Wills. The standard of the Royal British Legion, Helston branch, was present during the concert.

“It was a pleasure to sing in St Michael’s Church again,” said Elaine Tangye after the concert, “we enjoyed the evening.”

The choir is recording a new CD to celebrate its 60th anniversary in 2010. The CD will be released later this year.

The choir’s next concert will be with the Launceston Male Voice Choir in Launceston Methodist Church on Sunday, November 22, starting at 7pm.

Practice evenings are held in Flushing Church Hall on Monday evenings from 7.30pm to 9.30pm. Anyone interested in singing with the choir should please contact the Hon Secretary, Fred Bidgood on 01326 373984.
