The “industrial” look proposed for the new Sainsbury’s store in Helston led to the town’s councillors failing to give their support to the latest plans.
Development company Terrace Hill has already got outline planning permission to build the store and adjoining fuel station on land designed as a former helipad in Gay’s Hill, which used to belong to the Flambard’s Experience theme park that remains opposite.
Now the company has submitted detailed plans over the design and appearance of the building, which must be agreed before building work can begin.
Members of Helston town council’s planning committee were split when they met to discuss the application.
A proposal that the application be recommended for refusal by Cornwall Council was eventually passed with three votes to two.
