Mylor woman bids farewell to hospital volunteering

A volunteer from Mylor Bridge was wished a fond farewell after 14 years spent meeting and greeting at the doors of the Royal Cornwall Hospital’s Trelawny entrance.

Barbara Birkett, aged 85, received a bouquet by hospital trust chairman Martin Watts, Friends chairman Beatrice Dyer and representatives from the Volunteers Service.

Barbara, from Mylor Bridge, had previously worked at a GP practice in St Columb Major before taking up volunteering when she retired.

Barbara said: “When I retired from work I seemed to slip automatically into this type of work and I’ve absolutely loved it. I have made a lot of friends along the way and in fact we all go on holiday together.

“I shall miss it terribly but the friendships will continue.”

Barbara’s family has a succession of links with the medical world. One of her daughters, from Perranwell, works in Falmouth as a midwife, her granddaughter lives in Truro and works for the Royal Cornwall Hospital, while her grandson works in the medical branch of the Royal Navy.
