The Port of Falmouth Sailing Association is planning a spectacular sailing year for 2010. Based on the success of Henri-Lloyd Falmouth Week 2009 it aims to deliver even more next year, say officials.
In addition to the well proven programme, this year’s Falmouth Week saw the return of the Falmouth Working Boats, the introduction of two race groups in the Bay, the Wayfarer National Championships included in Dinghy Week, evening gig racing in the harbour, Lifesaving Championships on Gyllngvase Beach, the Red Arrows and an RNLI Fun Evening at Custom House Quay, an evening Parade of Sail, and daily entertainment on the Moor organised by local pubs.
Headed by the Visit Cornwall team, a host of local groups and town traders came together to provide a full Shoreside programme, beginning with the Carnival and ending with Fireworks, which brought the spirit of the Regatta right in to the town.
At its annual meeting this week the PoFSA Chairman, Steve Nicholls, was enthusiastically re-elected by the port sailing clubs and class associations. Many of the key committee members were also re-elected, together with some new blood to keep the ideas fresh.
A key attraction for Falmouth Week 2010 will be the 2nd running of the Pendennis Cup, bringing a fleet of magnificent classic sailing superyachts into the harbour.
Hosted by Pendennis Shipyard, whose expertise is a key draw for these craft, many of those competing in 2008 have already shown interest, together with a number of other even bigger yachts. Other fleets are not forgotten, with the classic ‘Redwing’ dinghy class holding its annual championships as part of Falmouth Dinghy Week. Each year Falmouth Week attracts around 400 yachts and dinghies, racing in 25 classes, plus the Classics Race and the Champagne Day. 2010 is expected to be even better.
PoFSA does not just organise Falmouth Week. As well as being the voice of sailing for the port, it coordinates the Village Regattas at eight locations around the River Fal. Held from June to August Bank Holiday these village regattas provide fun, laughter (and a great tea) for sailors and visitors alike, and are a traditional part of the summer season.
