IT was a game of two halves for Helston as they thrashed Wendron 6-1 at home to move top of the Jolly’s Combination League table.

The game had been switched from Wendron’s ground to Kellaway Park as the pitch at Underlane was deemed unplayable due to heavy rainfall on Friday and Saturday.

Helston will have been pleased to have got the game to go-ahead as they looked to take advantage of league leaders Penryn Reserves’ inactivity.

They also managed to profit from Perranporth’s match in the Carlsberg South West Peninsula League being called off, by persuading their striker Mike Davis to play a one-off game for them - replacing the injured Neil Southall.

It was Davis who got the opening goal after good work from Reg Pearson. Pearson picked up possession on the right and beat his defender, before drawing the keeper out of goal and squaring the ball to Davis to slot home.

Pearson then got on the scoresheet himself as he profited from an excellent flick-on form Craig Taylor to run in on goal from an angle before rounding the keeper, loosing his footing and eventually striking the ball in.

Wendron were not with out their chances however and forced Barry Hennessy into a good double save midway through the first half.

Pearson then rattled the visitors’ crossbar as the home side continued to dominate.

He then added Helston’s third by smashing the ball past the advancing keeper after being helped by another Taylor flick-on.

Pearson’s hat-trick was completed on 30 minutes when he took on the Wendron defenders and keeper, again, to fire home for his 25th goal of a prolific season.

The game was then out of sight at half time when Graham Blake hit a fine volley into the bottom corner after being set up well by Mike Hallibone. However, the second half was a different story for the home side as they took their foot off the pedal. Wendron to their credit had reorganised well and came out battling. Hennessy was forced to tip an early shot round the post before then blocking a header from the resulting corner.

Tom Langford then got Wendron’s solitary goal when he fired in from 12 yards following an attack down the right.

Jordan Adlard then completed the day’s scoring when he hit a shot low into the bottom corner following a good run and pass from Pearson.
