Lizard lifeboat crew says job well done

The gas tanker 'Antigoni', adrift with machinery failure and struggling to anchor in a position 1.5 miles south east of Lizard Point yesterday, is now on her way.

The Lizard Lifeboat stood by until two ocean going tugs, including the Coastguard vessel Anglian Princess reached the scene.

The lifeboat, under the command of Coxswain Phil Burgess, was then ordered to stand by the casualty whilst repairs aboard were being carried out to get the tanker safely underway once again.

The 14 crew on the tanker were ordered to abort anchoring in the area, as a snagging hazard with seabed telecommunications cables was likely.

Once coastguards had assessed the casualty was drifting in a safe direction, away from the coastline, and with the two tugs in company to assist if required, The Lizard lifeboat returned to Kilcobben Cove.

Back at base there was a celebration.

The Lizard lifeboat station recruited a new full-time station mechanic Dan Atkinson, from Fowey over three months ago and Monday’s launch heralded a very delighted Dan achieving his first operational service with the boat.

It was for this reason an excited shore crew, together with Dan's wife Sue were assembled in the boathouse, ready to greet them back after a job well done together.
