Penryn Reserves manager Andy Parry says any talk of his team winning the Jolly’s Combination League title at this stage is premature - despite the team starting the season on a 17 game unbeaten run.

It has left the team a point-clear at the top of the table and along with St Dennis, the only Cornwall senior side still to be defeated so far this campaign.

Not many had predicted Penryn as title contenders before the start of the season, but a 2-0 win away at Helston on Saturday, themselves one of the league favourites, has got people starting to take notice of the young team from Kernick.

And although admitting the unbeaten start has come as surprise, Parry says the signs of success were there towards the end of the last campaign when they only lost two out of their last 13.

When asked what he puts the recent form down to, Parry, said: The lads (most of whom are under-18) are keen and willing to learn, they train very hard. We’ve also kept a lot of clean sheets. We’ve probably got one of the best defensive units in the league. We are well organised and if you don’t concede many goals then you give yourself a base to build from.”

The base for battling for league honours has also been built, but the manager is keeping a cool head on his side’s chances.

“Obviously I’m not going to say we are going to do this and win that. We have made a good start but any talk of winning the league, by any side, is premature at this stage.

“If we carry on undeafeted then we will be up there but there is more than half the season to go.”
