Helston fire fighters had a busy night, tackling two blazes in the area early this morning.

Two crews from Helston were first called out, with extra help from Mullion drafted in, to fight a kitchen fire in Wendron Street, Helston just before 1am.

A member of the public called 999 to say a smoke detector was sounding and there was a smell of smoke coming from one of the flats in the street.

When they arrived the crews found the fire had already been put out, but two casualties were suffering from the effects of breathing in smoke.

They were given 100 per cent oxygen by paramedics before being passed to the care of the ambulance service.

Meanwhile fire fighters searched the rest of the flat with a heat seeking camera, to make sure the fire had not spread, and cleared the flat of smoke before leaving.

Just over an hour after their first call out the crews were back out again, this time to a field near Crasken Farm, on the outskirts of the town.

The two Helston crews were this time joined by fire fighters from Falmouth for the 2.15am call out.

In the field they found a caravan already wel alight, with gas cylinders nearby.

The fire fighters used hosereels to fight the flames and also cool the cylinders, which were in danger of exploding if they became too hot.

Once the flames were out, the cylinders were immersed in a water dam, to cool them fully.
