The Newquay SAFE partnership work has been shortlisted for a national government innovation award.

The partnership approach to tackling issues in Newquay has been recognised as an admirable example of delivering services in new ways to bring real benefits to citizens.

In applying for the award the partners’ joint application summarised how the Newquay SAFE partnership was developed to create and put into action new, innovative and locally responsive ways to address the situation within Newquay.

Shortlisted applicants had to demonstrate genuine collaboration, radically different ideas and leading edge practice when tackling the challenges their area faced to get nominated.

Dave Sleeman, chairman of the Newquay Town Residents Association said: “The Newquay SAFE team deserve this award for their initiative in very quickly producing a forward looking plan to address the major problems experienced in our town during the summer months of 2009. “The residents of Newquay are extremely grateful for the positive steps being put in place to bring respect back to the wonderful resort in which we reside and are sure that we will regain the reputation of being a top class holiday destination for all to enjoy.

“The tide has turned and the prospects are looking brighter for all who live and operate businesses in our town. Well done Newquay Safe Team.”

Town mayor John Fitter said that it was wonderful news.

“I am thrilled that our partnership work has been recognised nationally. The tragic events of this summer attracted national interest and the partners’ hard work since then has perhaps not received the same attention.

“The Newquay SAFE project is so good because it puts people first and we are all working together with a common objective - to help, look after and take care of our local communities and visitors.”
