Pest exterminators were called into a Newquay fast food chain after a rat scuttled across the dining area in front of shocked customers.

The rat was chased from the KFC store in East Street by a member of staff, after dodging a number of customers who were forced to leap onto their chairs to escape it.

One customer asked for her money back after the incident, while a number made complaints to the environmental health officer.

A KFC spokesman said the company had contacted the pest control agency and also the environmental health officer themselves.

He added that there was no evidence to suggest there was a rat infestation and staff had been given advice on how to stop rodents from getting into the store.
