SHOW: A sure sign that Christmas is near is the reappearance at this time each year of the Kenwyn Valley Flower and Garden Club’s Christmas show at Trelissick, Feock.

The skill and ingenuity of members’ arrangements using flowers, foliage, berries and baubles was well up to standard with its provision of a veritable brain box of ideas for festive decorations for the home.

Staged in the stables at the garden at the weekend the riot of colour did much to brighten the somewhat sombre setting of stalls, tack and harness room, and attracted a good number of visitors over the three days.

First welcome came with huge Christmas trees in the Ladder Walk all decorated in silver and white to represent “White Christmas”.

Then this year at the stables entrance was a new section, “Christmas Wish” where members were invited to create wishing wells with water into which visitors could donate money to be donated to the Previous Lives Appeal.

A huge swag of foliage and stephanotis led into the harness room where there were table settings, and majestic pedestals contrasting finely with the small napkin ring decorations.

Chairwoman Oliveen Bearham said she was pleased with the entries from their 30 or so members, particularly with the response to the novices’ class which had produced some excellent work.

Best in show award went to Virginia Perkins and best use of colour to Catherine Reeve.

Shirley Evans won “Christmas Cheer”, Oliveen Bearham won “Christmas Eve”, Carol Ough won best napkin ring and Virginia Perkins won “New Year’s Ball”.

The club meets on the fourth Tuesday of every month at Carnon Downs village hall.

CHRISTMAS FAIR: Although not as good a turnout as hoped for, villagers and visitors to St Feock Christmas bazaar helped swell the church hall fund by just over £1300.

Biggest profit maker was the popular raffle for three luxury hampers, selling more than 700 tickets and raising £610 after expenses.

Helpers were: Wendy Gladwyn, Audrey Handley, Jeff Baker, David Gladwyn, Judy Barrington, Jean Trerise and Lorna Weaver; cakes and preserves, Dorothy Hodge, Marjorie Blackhurst, Elizabeth Heather and Jean Mann; Christmas stall and gifts, Clare Beard and Audrey Handley; tombola, Martin and Ros Smith and choir; bookstall, Colin North, Paul Trerise and Val Jeffrey; sweets in a jar, Fleur Davis and Sunday School; Christmas cake weight, Wendy Gladwyn; Lucky Dip, Trina Oxford; refreshments, Christine Brock, Di Tessier, Jo Evans, Jenny Kemp and Margaret Orriss. Roy Howell provided the Christmas tree.
