Sunday morning service, the first in Advent, was conducted by Barry May of Carharrack. As it was Mr May’s first visit for many years he was welcomed by Margaret Dancer.

Mr May said he has been a local preacher for 53 years in the Redruth Circuit up to a year ago when it became part of the Falmouth and Gwennap Circuit. He opened the service with prayers of innovation for Advent. The first Advent candle was lit by John Burns.

Rosemary Webber read the Old Testament lesson from the book of Jeremiah, chapter 33 v 14-16 from the New International Bible version. The New Testament lesson, taken from the gospel of St Luke, chapter 21 v 25-36 was read by David Kneebone.

Psalm 27 was taken as a shared reading with the congregation.

In his sermon, based on the readings, Mr May said today we must start thinking seriously about Advent. In Jeremiah god said the time was coming when He would fulfil the promise made to the people of Israel and Judah “Just as I have brought disaster to these people, so I am going to give them all the good things that I have promised.”

In St Luke, Jesus speaks of the destruction of Jerusalem and the Son of Man appearing “When these things begin to happen, stand up and raise your heads, because your salvation is near.” Jesus is saying we must see beyond oppression and injustice, however bad things look in the world history is in the hands of God.

The Christian year begins with Advent, redemption can come to us if we are faithful to our trust in Jesus, through Jesus we receive the Holy Spirit and grow in holiness. We can believe the message of hope that God will fulfil His promised to us.

On Sunday at 10.30am, morning worship will be an all age service led by the Rev Arthur Cowburn and the young people’s group “Cool Christian Cats”
