The church year moved on this week. Gone the long season of Trinity to the much shorter season of Advent, Sunday being the first of the four Sundays of Advent.

The sung parish mass was modified from its normal format to include a baptism. Infant Claudia Ohly had been brought by her parents Ryan and Gemma to receive the sacrament. They were supported by a large number of family and friends.

The mass president was Father Stephen Drakeley, priest-in-charge and the service began with the singing of one of the best known and well loved Advent Carol “Lo He comes with clouds descending.

Fr Stephen then greeted the congregation before reminding everyone of the solemnity of the sacrament of baptism.

Barbara Martin read the Old Testament lesson, Jeremiah, chapter 33 v 14-16. The prophet foretells the coming of the fulfilment of the promise made to Israel and Judah by the Lord.

Jane MacLennan then read the second lesson, part of Paul’s first letter to the Thessalonians, chapter 3 v 9-13.

Again the theme is one of “Looking forward.” Father Stephen proclaimed Luke’s gospel, chapter 21 v 25-36. The subject is further enhanced this time by Jesus Himself, telling His disciples to look for the signs signifying His second coming.

Fr Stephen in his address took this subject of “Looking Forward” as found in the lessons and then related it to future life of baby Claudia. To the singing of the carol “The Holly and the Ivy” David Cunliffe lit the first candle on the Advent ring. Fr Stephen then celebrated at the eucharist. Server for the mass was Anthea Bancroft, sidespersons were Maureen Roberts and Francis, organist was Roger King. After the presentation of the baptismal candle, the mass ended with the hymn “Wake O Wake with Tidings Thrilling.”
