A GOOD second half performance from Penryn secured victory in a thrilling game of rugby against Okehampton.

Both teams played good 15-man running, handling rugby, with the result up for grabs right to the final whistle.

Penryn were a bit careless in the first half, allowing Okehampton’s backs to score tries, but they more than made amends in the second half with a determination and character that has become the hallmark of this team.

Okehampton took the lead in the second minute when they threw out a long pass to winger Rob Fishleigh who duly scored in the corner.

On four minutes Penryn’s James ran strongly up field giving a well-timed pass to winger Mike Slater who touched down.

Three minutes later Okehampton’s scrum-half Rich Friend made a very neat break to score under the posts; Carl Pointon converted.

On 14 minutes it was Penryn’s turn to make a successful clean break by Pete Webster who scored. This was soon followed by a powerful drive by the strong home pack with James Mann making it over the line to score; David Pascoe converted.

The next ten minutes saw Okehampton score two penalty goals followed by a brief period of aerial ping pong. Both teams then resumed constructive rugby; and on half time Okehampton broke out to give a scoring pass to Luke Honeychurch who went over in the corner leaving Penryn trailing 17 points to 23.

In the second half there was then a subtle change with Okehampton’s backs looking fallible as Penryn increaed the pressure.

A typical Borough forwards drive led to a pass to Matthew Symons who broke through several players to score under the posts, David Pascoe converted.

The score remained at Penryn 24, Okehampton 23 untill the final quarter when Pascoe kicked two more penalty goals.
