Falmouth could have a state-of-the-art skateboarding park if a working party started by a teenage student is successful in its campaign.

A group on social networking website Facebook, called Get a New Skatepark in Falmouth, now has over 1000 members, but the idea to replace the existing skate park on Dracaena Avenue, which experts say could only last another five years, has evolved into a working party holding regular meetings.

The group’s mission statement says: “Falmouth has been in dire need of a new skate park for a long time. All the ramps are covered in dents and the concrete is extremely rough. This group will be shown to Falmouth council in an attempt to show them how desperate we are for a new park.”

The idea has snowballed since Falmouth School student Mikey Cartlidge visited town councillor Vicky Eva, to ask if a skate park would be suitable for the regeneration project at Trescobeas.

Councillor Eva said: “We had a meeting with the Trescobeas working party and at that meeting we had 35 to 40 people with their skateboards after Mikey put it on Facebook, it was fantastic. It shows how determined they are to get what they want.”
