Pupils from Falmouth’s St Francis School may now need to write an acceptance speech after they beat off strong competition to win the Youth Speaks contest.
The St Francis team travelled to Bodmin Community College to take on other Cornish schools in the competition, a national initiative from Rotary clubs, where they gave the talk called, “Should new words be added to the dictionary?” for five minutes.
The team was made up of 11-year-old Jessica Sutton and Rachel Elvans and Abi Brewer, both aged ten.
Their teacher Vanessa Farnell said: “The team had a great time practising and put their heart and soul in to the competition.”
Judges Chris McQuillen-Wright, Barbara Russell, and Martin Baille praised the high standard of all the presentations and the confidence that the teams showed in standing up in front of an audience.
Other topics included, “Should chocolate be allowed in packed lunches at school?” “Are there too many gadgets?” “What is beauty?” and “Snow and climate change.”
