Camborne College students talk politics with parliamentary candidates

Three prospective parliamentary candidates joined Cornwall College Camborne students to celebrate cultural diversity.

Julia Goldsworthy, MP for the Liberal Democrats, George Eustice for the Conservative party and Jude Robinson for the Labour party went to the college to talk to the students about cultural diversity.

The seminar covered a diverse number of issues and the students were able to ask questions and voice their own opinions on topics from the current lack of graduate job opportunities to the expenses scandal and the NHS.

“It’s fantastic that Cornwall College celebrates cultural diversity, I think it’s important for people to understand and appreciate different cultural identities, there’s a good balance here at the college and it’s great that it’s embedded as part of the curriculum,” said Julia Goldsworthy.

Jude Robinson added: “Cultural diversity is at the heart of our society and it’s superb that the college celebrates it. We had a great turnout for the talk today and have discussed lots of different issues, I’ve enjoyed talking to the students.”

A-level student Alison Roberts, 17, from Camborne said: “I find politics interesting but don’t know a lot about it, I’ll be able to vote this year so thought this would be a useful insight, which it has been and a great extension of cultural diversity week.”

The students were not shy about getting involved even though at some points they had to ask for the political jargon to be explained.

George Eustice said: “This was a packed audience which proves that the often quoted assumption that young people are apathetic about politics certainly does not apply to Cornwall College.

“Our debate covered a wide range of issues with some really searching and detailed questions.”
