Pasty makers seek product protection status

The term "Cornish pasty" could soon be given EU protection if a bid by a Cornish MEP and the county's pasty makers is successful.

South West MEP Graham Watson is holding meetings with EU commissioner in Strasbourg trying to ensure that only pasties made in the county to a certain style can officially be called Cornish.

Cornish clotted cream and the Cornish sardine are already on the protected list.

The move follows pasty makers in the county winning Defra's backing to take their case to the EU in 2008.
