Independent experts gathering evidence as part of the review of the contentious move of upper gastro-intestinal cancer services to Plymouth are asking for the public to get in touch.
IRP staff have already visits the NHS facilities in Cornwall and Devon and Later this month the IRP will hear directly from patients, NHS staff, interest groups and local authority representatives.
Dr Peter Barrett, chair of the IRP, is leading the review. He said: “Our reviews are conducted in an open and transparent way and we are keen to hear from members of the public in Cornwall with an interest in the changes. We are considering a wide range of evidence and it is important that local people come forward and have their say.”
In January 2010 upper gastro-intestinal cancer surgery was transferred from the Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust to the Derriford site of Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust. The changes have been contested by the Cornwall Health and Adults Overview and Scrutiny Committee. The Secretary of State for Health, Rt Hon Andy Burnham MP, has asked the IRP to provide advice to him to ensure the changes provide a safe, sustainable and accessible service for the local population.
The IRP will make recommendations to the health secretary by June 4, and he will make the final decision on changes to services in the area.
