Falmouth Gig Club’s Ladies wan the World Gig Champions after they stormed to victory in the annual event in the Isles of Scilly.

It was the tenth time the ladies team have won the trophy.

This year 121 gigs assembled at the start line providing a magnificent spectacle of colour as 800 gig rowers did battle off the islands in what is the biggest sporting event in the south west.

Coxed by Malcom Hattem the ladies A team of Esther Oldrieve, Lena Oldrieve, Claire White, Jenny Shipley and Lizzie Fernie and Karen Beswetherick rowed with aggression in metronomic style throughout the weekend of races.

The Falmouth ladies started with a vengeance with Irene Too and Polvarth slowly pulling away from the rest of the gigs. Coxswain Malcom Hattem shouted words of encouragement to his crew who gave every last ounce of strength in their bodies to maintain a good lead right to the finish winning ahead of Polvarth by several lengths. In third place came a Dutch crew rowing Vliegende Hollander.

Falmouth Ladies B finished in 13th place overall in the 113 strong fleet with Helford ladies coming 17th and 18th.
