A distinguished Scottish composer visited Truro Cathedral as part of the celebrations for the Diocesan Choral Festival.

Dozens of church choirs joined together for the event, watched by composer James MacMillan, who also saw 12 young singers and four adults receive awards from the Royal School of Church Music.

After enjoying a specially Scottish themed supper in the Cathedral restaurant, James gave the Cathedral’s annual Benson Lecture to a huge audience numbering over 500, talking about the connection between faith and music.

The Cathedral’s director of music, Christopher Gray, said: “It has been a real privilege to have James MacMillan with us this weekend. History may judge him to be the successor to Edward Elgar and Benjamin Britten and I am delighted that so many people flocked to the Cathedral to hear the man and his music.”
