The history of a forgotten lugger that was part of the St Ives fishing fleet will be uncovered at a special talk at Falmouth's National Maritime Museum.
The workhorse of Cornish fishing fleet for over 200 years, luggers came into prominence during the late 18th . But, until recent attempts to re-establish them, the Jumbo was a forgotten member of the St Ives fleet.
Expert John McWilliams will unearth the story of the Jumbo, the smallest and probably least known of the St Ives luggers, and put it into context with the once numerous St Ives lugger fleets and try to uncover the reasons why they faded so quickly from popular memory.
He said: “Even older St Ives people from fishing families have never heard of Jumbos. This talk will uncover their fascinating history.”
The set lunch and lecture, entitled St Ives Luggers – Return of the Jumbo, is from 12.30pm on Monday, November 1 and costs £14.50.
