Falmouth Harbour Commissioners have invested in two new marine apprentices who are busy settling into their new roles.
As well as learning on-the-job skills, John Cruse, 18, and Matthew Ormond, 26, are completing level 2 NVQs in marine engineering at Falmouth Marine School.
The apprentices are already learning their way around boat maintenance and operations and will be helping to look after Falmouth’s moorings throughout the winter months.
Matt said: “I’m from Wales originally and I’ve been a surfing and climbing instructor, and a beach lifeguard, which has taken me all over the world. I studied marine engineering at Falmouth Marine School and at the end of my course I was successful in obtaining this apprenticeship. My first month has been challenging and exciting and I feel proud to be part of the FHC team.”
John, from Penryn, said: “Before progressing to FHC I also studied at Falmouth Marine School for two years in which I achieved an NVQ level 1 in marine engineering and completed a City and Guilds level 2 in marine engineering. Both of these courses I thoroughly enjoyed.”
Harbour Master Mark Sansom said: “We strongly believe in sustainable, highly-skilled jobs and we are delighted to welcome Matthew and John to the FHC family.
“They have settled in well and are both keen and enthusiastic in getting to know their new roles. We are pleased to be working alongside Falmouth Marine School in giving something back to the local community.”
