University College Falmouth has issued a statement reassuring parents worried about their children who are students in the town, following the fire at Falmouth Docks this morning.
Students living in Maritime Studios, near the docks, had to be evacuated early this morning after the fire broke out close to acetylene cylinders and a number of explosions could be heard.
The statement from the university reads: “As you may be aware from media reports, an explosion and subsequent fire at Falmouth Docks today resulted in the evacuation of students from Maritime Studios, a nearby off-campus residential complex that is privately-owned.
“We would like to reassure parents that no student was hurt as a result of this explosion and that if you have not yet heard from your son or daughter, they are being well-cared for by our accommodation and welfare team.
“We have arranged emergency accommodation for any student who is affected by this incident in university-managed residences at the Tremough Campus in Penryn and are making ’phones available to those who left their mobiles in Maritime Studios. We are also providing food and clothing.”
Parents and guardians could contact the Porters' Lodge at the Tremough Campus on 01326 253503 with any further queries.
