Falmouth coastguard station is to remain open 24 hours a day after the government backed down on controversial plans to seriously downscale it.

Confirmation came this lunchtime, with an announcement in parliament.

Falmouth will now remain open round-the-clock after a proposal for it to only open during daylight hours.

This U-turn means victory for the 7,459 people who signed the Packet’s petition to save the centre.

However, it is bad news for coastguards in Brixham, which is to be closed.

Simon May, a coastguard at Falmouth, said this had let to bittersweet celebrations in Falmouth. He said: “We’re relieved. Brixham are going though, which is a shame, because they were very busy as well.”
