A Falmouth-based garden designer has been named a champion at this year’s Royal Horticultural Society Flower Show.

Daniela Coray was named winner in the RHS National Young Designer of the Year competition.

Daniela, 26, produced a garden called 'A Stitch in Time Saves Nine’.

On receiving the award from RHS president, Elizabeth Banks, Daniela said: “I’m completely overwhelmed, just overjoyed! I want to thank everyone for all their support, I couldn’t have done it without them.”

Her garden looks at the issue of green spaces in urban areas. The garden is purposefully low maintenance.

Daniela, who is originally from Virginia in USA, moved to Falmouth in 2007 and after gaining a degree in garden design is currently completing a Masters in art and environment at University College Falmouth.

Last year she set up her own design company, Daniela Coray Landscapes, in Cornwall and specialises in an environmentally aware approach to garden design.

Mrs Banks said: “It is incredibly exciting for a designer to be recognised at this stage and to now go forward with her career. Daniela has chosen a difficult subject, but she has overcome the challenges and produced an accomplished garden.”

Now in its second year, the RHS National Young Designer of the Year competition is open to designers and students under 28 from across the UK.

Daniela was one of three shortlisted designers given £12,000 by the RHS, to bring her garden design to life at the RHS Flower Show Tatton Park at the end of last week.

She was then named the winner at the show.
