A children’s charity and one lucky Falmouth woman are celebrating this week after Falmouth Cycles gave away two bicycles in just one day.

Owner Derek Heelis presented a child’s bike to Bernadette Thoreau, corporate partnerships fundraiser with Children’s Hospice South West, at the Bickland Water Road shop.

This will be used at Little Harbour, the charity’s new hospice that has been built at St Austell.

Mr Heelis said: “We believe in supporting charity – I’ve always done that. There are kids out there that aren’t able to have a new bike. And it’s Christmas!”

Miss Thoreau said that bike would be well used, especially by the siblings of ill children staying at the hospice. The whole family stays at the hospice while the child is receiving respite care.

She said: “It’s perfect timing, because this is the week that the first families are arriving at Little Harbour. We have got lovely gardens that particularly the siblings will be able to use bikes in.”

She thanked Mr Heelis for his donation, adding: “It’s fantastic. We’re really grateful for the support. Now we have got this amazing building it’s so important we have got things to put in it.”

While she was there, Miss Thoreau drew the winning ticket in a customer raffle that has been running since the shop opened at the beginning of October.

Denise Burton from Falmouth was selected at random as the winner of the free competition and will receive her bicycle in time for Christmas.

Mr Heelis said he would provide whatever bike was most appropriate.
