Bankruptcy rates are higher in Cornwall than in any other region of England and Wales.
That was the finding of the Consumer Credit Counselling Service, which found that, in 2009, 24 people in every 10,000 were filing for bankruptcy in the Duchy.
That compares to more than double the rate of Greater London, where 11 in 10,000 are being forced to take similar action.
It also marks a huge increase in the past decade. In 2009, just eight people per 10,000 were going bankrupt.
Service spokeswoman Una Farrell said: "Compared to other counties, especially in the North, they [people in the South West] are relatively wealthy, so people therefore have more access to credit.
"They also don't have any major urban hubs, so if someone does lose their job it's harder for them to find employment.”
