A service of thanksgiving will take place this afternoon for a teacher whose dedication helped inspire generations of Helston’s children.
Gerald (Gerry) Symons, who taught at Helston Community College between 1974 and 2010, died on Christmas Day from cancer.
A service of thanksgiving will now take place today at 2pm, at Camborne Methodist Church (just up from the post office) where the closing hymn will be a rousing rendition of Trelawny to reflect Gerald true Cornish character.
This will be followed by pasties and saffron buns “in true Gerry style.”
His popularity and the regard in which he was held was demonstrated when, for a while, it was thought Helston Community College may close for the afternoon of the service, as so many staff wanted to attend.
- A full tribute appears in this week's Packet, out now.
