'Onslaught' of students sparks meeting

Residents of three roads in Penryn, which have suffered from increased parking congestion recently, will get to have their say on a proposed permit scheme tomorrow.

The public meeting, at Penryn Town Hall on Thursday, February 16, at 7pm, will ask residents of Helston Road, West Street and Station Road their views on parking permits.

Representatives from the town council, Cornwall Council’s planning department and “hopefully” from the developers of the student flats on Station Road will be present, councillor Mary May said.

“To date I have had possibly 40 phone calls and e-mails which I forward on to planning and highways,” she told the town council this month.

“The idea of the meeting is to explore parking permits – we have been down this road before, but I think what we need to look at is the onslaught of 231 students in the new academic year.”

The car park on Station Road will be closed off until May, Mrs May said, but alternatives are available on Saracen Way and at the Job Centre car park, which are free to use from 4pm every evening.

Funny, I always thought the collective noun for students was 'gaggle', not 'onslaught': ooh look, there's an onslaught of students!"

Falmouth and Penryn should learn from places like Clifton, Cotham and Redland in Bristol. Family houses have been turned into student houses with six or seven occupants (plus boy/girlfriends).
As a result parking is a nightmare. Many cars arrive at the beginning of term and don't move until the end of term.
