A former Falmouth journalism student held by militia men in Libya after being accused of spying has been released.

Gareth Montgomery-Johnson was one of two British journalists held after their capture in Tripoli on February 22.

Earlier this week it was confirmed that Mr Montgomery-Johnson and fellow freelance journalist Nicholas Davies-Jones, with the Iranian state-owned Press TV, were transferred to the custody of the Libyan government and were due to leave the war torn country.

A Foreign Office spokeswoman said: “We welcome the release of the two British journalists who have recently been detained in Libya. Foreign Office officials are providing them with consular assistance which we have done throughout.

He added that Mr Montgomery-Johnson was in the care of consular staff, they were well, and that they look forward to being reunited with their families soon.”

The men were detained by the Saraya Swehli brigade, based in Misrata.

The men had recently appeared in a video that appeared online, apologizing for entering Libya illegally.
