Keen-eyed drivers on Falmouth’s main thoroughfare will notice a change of scenery this summer, when plans to minimise planting on one of the larger roundabouts comes into force.

The roundabout, which sits between Sainsbury’s supermarket and the McDonalds on Dracaena Avenue, will change from seasonal bedding to low maintenance sustainable planting following a review by Cornwall Council.

A spokesperson for the council said: “This is on the grounds of cost and maintenance as well as better ensuring the safety of operatives and less disruption to road users.

“The site has also been the subject of recent vandalism and theft of plants which Cornwall Council has insufficient resources to make this good immediately.”

Falmouth town council agreed with the review’s findings when they discussed the matter at their last finances and general purposes committee meeting.

Councillor Dr David Sterratt was all for the change: “I find it a little bit gaudy when they plant it out,” he said.

Councillor Diana Merritt said: “I quite agree with what they want to do with this site. I think Ponsharden is absolutely delightful and they should do this the same. We could have a ship’s gun there or a ship’s anchor.”

Councillor Gerald Chin-Quee was a little more apprehensive. “I won’t say I’m happy about it, but I will accept it. They should make it reasonable and eye catching.”
