Penwith College science labs up for award

Penwith College has been shortlisted as one of the top colleges for laboratory provision and design for the science laboratories in its new Porthcurno Building.

This building was part of a £30 million redevelopment of the site in Penzance. S-Lab stands for safe, successful and sustainable laboratories.

The S-Lab awards scheme recognises excellence in laboratory design, operation and management in all sectors, and in laboratory-based teaching and learning within educational institutions, that creates improved performance whilst enhancing safety and sustainability.

Such an award scheme is timely because organisations are under growing pressure to improve the performance of their laboratories due to financial pressures, legal compliance issues, rising expectations from laboratory users and rising energy and other costs.

Winners of the award will be announced in June. Martin Tucker, College Director said, “I am delighted that the College has been recognised for the excellence in design of the laboratories. They are unique in shape with high ceilings, lots of natural light and utilise the sustainable features that we have in all of the new buildings. They have made a huge difference to the delivery of science based courses at the college which benefits the students greatly.”
