With the Old Cattle Market in Helston a link between the past and future of the town, it seemed only fitting to decorate the building in a similar way.
The building, built on the site of the town’s former cattle market next to Coronation Park, is a project of the South Kerrier Alliance (SKA), who now hope to boost the future of the town by holding community events there.
To continue this link, the walls of the large market hall area now display photographs showing parts of Helston in years gone by.
The images include an aerial view of Helston from the early 1970s, the requisition of horses from the First World War taken in around 1914 and the opening of Coronation Park in 1912.
They have been blown up from the size of postcards to create 6ft square canvases by Prestige Signs of Ponsanooth. Managing director Mick Heath was invited to see the images in situ, along with Helston Museum curator Janet Spargo and her predecessor Martin Matthews, who provided many of the original images.
Jeanette O’Connell, who manages the building, said: “We have left two spaces, because we believe there’s two big social history occasions still to come – one of which is the Olympic Torch and the other one will be the 100 years of Coronation Park.”
