THEY might not have scaled the heights of some of their fellow Cornish clubs, but St Day RFC can look back at its past with a deep sense of pride and satisfaction having been involved in Cornish club rugby for well over 100 years.

The St Day club was founded in 1894 and celebrated their 110th season in 2004 with a game against a select Cornwall Clubs XV, eventually losing 55-0, but again ensuring that despite being a village side it always manages to embody the true spirit of grassroots rugby.

It has had its successes over the years, but above all provides the first stepping stone along the rugby playing ladder for those fortunate enough to go on and make a name in the game. The current president and former player, Mike Downing, epitomises that ethos having gone on to play for Redruth RFC.

The club is delighted that former player Martyn Opie has rejoined the club as vice captain with the captaincy once again being taken by Matthew Downing.

Training is held on Tuesdays at 7 pm under the guidance of coaches Michael Lawry, Tony Mitchell, and Mike Downing.

Last season St Day played 32, won 19, lost 13, scored 516 points and conceded 506. Top try scorer was Michael Lawry. The top points scorer was Matthew Downing.

The club chairman is Tony Mitchell, treasurer is Trish Lawry, assistant treasurer is Les Chippett, and the secretary/CRFU representative is Ryan Cook.
