Vote for Helston's new 'brand'

Helston residents and traders are just weeks away from being able to vote on their favourite design to promote the town to the wider world.

A ‘branding’ project has been taking place in the town for the last few months, with people first asked to put forward three words that best describe the town. Focus groups were then held to discuss the ideas in more detail and from this Ki Design, based at Tresprison Business Park, has put together six branding ideas that feature many of the submitted words and look in detail at everything from logos to colours, fonts and images.

Later this month these ideas will be put on display in the town for the public to view and vote on, with the favourite one being adopted to promote Helston across the rest of the county and nationally.

Town centre manager Jonathan Birkett said: “It’s quite an exciting point. We want to encourage people to come in and vote for their favourite brand in the shops. The one that receives the most votes will be selected. We’ll keep that under wraps until we launch in time for Christmas.”

Full explanations about the different designs will be available at helstonbip.co.uk, which is about to go fully live.

'Free parking here', or 'Reliable bus service' are the only words that interest me for Helston. How much is all this branding costing?

think the tcm is getting his priorities wrong ,,think people would be more interested with free parking than a logo etc, went to Camborne yesterday and it was great to just park and not have to pay for it. Incidentally the car park was being well used and the town itself was thriving. Emailed the tcm last wednesday, today had an email to say it was undelivered due to error. used the address i saw on internet. odd.

It says on the helstonbip.co.uk site

"what makes the difference between a busy, bustling tourist destination and a ghost town? successful branding".

I think the answer should be 'Free parking'

How pathetic are the attempts to regenerate Helston. Logos and Hanging Baskets and such are not the answer. Parking needs addressing urgently, especially now Camborne has taken the initiative of 2hrs free parking. Helston is a dirty, tired, vandalised poorly maintained backwater and a most unattractive place to visit. It does not help that the local councillors seem to be blindfolded and unable to see what years of amateurish management have done to what could be a lovely town. Weeds, degarded properties and a proliferation of amateur signage are all signs of a town on the slippery slope. For instance, has anyone notice how many signs are around the cottage hospital roundabout and how untidy it all is? This is the main gateway to Helston. Attention to detail is what is required. We need to get the parking sorted out and then make the place a pleasant experience through maintenance and the application of taste in all town matters. A good start would be to get rid of all the amateur signage - especially around the boating lake.

Giving people free parking isn't going to work!!!! If that was the answer, then Helston would be incredibly busy up until 10am and again after 4pm, which all Cornwall Council car parks are free before and after this time! Or for a quid you can park all afternoon after 2pm. It's pretty cheap really.

Yes, Camborne BID (Business Impovement District) are doing 2 hrs free parking for a short period of time to gauge whether it will work, and this is in one car park (behind Argos) and you can only do this once in any one day and you still have to go and get a ticket. As this is a BID initiative, it isn't technically free; it's free for the punters, but the traders of the town will be paying it out of their rates.

Rome wasn't built in a day, but I love all the hanging baskets!

THORQUIP i agree about the approach into town from cottage hospital end. There are far too many signs along the stretch of road around there.. The weeds are completely out of control and look awful as does the amount of rubbish lying around, which has worsened around Meneage Road area since the new Subway opened. There are wrappers etc wherever you go. Instead of wasting money on Logos etc it should be spent on these problems, more regular road sweeping would be a start . Make the town more attractive to visit in the first instance which would also benefit from new shops and then advertise it as a great place to visit,

Gill Zella Martin says...
4:50pm Mon 10 Sep 12

Free parking after 16:00 in Helston is not attractive enough, for example, everytime I have gone into town after four o'clock, the shops I required were closed. The traders would not be subsidising free car parking in Helston if there were more free bays introduced in Coinagehall Street funded from the Tesco/Sainsbury money. I agree car park charges in Helston are relatively cheap now compared with other places, and I would be quite happy to pay them, however, some people just will not pay for parking if they know they can visit the out of town places and park for free.

I additionally think refurbishing the toilets should be on the list of improvements.

St Just is only a small town but it is always busy and so is their car park and that has always been free.

Why did they introduce the name 'Lakeside' on a huge notice for Coronation lake, it sounds like the huge indoor shopping centre in Essex, why did they not keep it as Coronation Lake and Coronation Park.

I like the hanging baskets in Helston, but this Logo/branding business I personally think is a waste of time and money.

I think they should close Meneage Street once a week and have a boot fair, no outlay cost for market stalls or storage.

Advertising on verges and farmers fields around Helston is desperation tactics by some businesses in need of local custom.

How do you promote Helston to the wider world ? Isn't that why over £40,000 a year is being paid to a Town Centre Manager and an Assistant ?

Gill Zella Martin says...

I have never made it a secret that my personal opinion is, that a town the size of Helston does not warrant the expense of a town manager.Town councillors could apply for any relevant funding as they have done elsewhere locally, and business owners could develop groups within which ideas could be brought forward and perhaps put into effect, with the help of some funding. Look at the Christmas lights in Helston, they have been organised for years on a voluntary basis without the need for a paid manager to oversee them, and they certainly bring people into Helston during the Christmas period. I was quite happy to have an objective view about the second town manager until sadly he replied to my e-mail stating that the buses were not his responsibility, and additionally made it plain that his only input in a reliable bus service in and out of town would be to pass my own comments on to Cornwall Council and 'First'. This in fact would be a futile exercise as I had already informed him that I was doing that myself. My idea was that he take it up himself with the company, to show a personal interest in encouraging extrall footfall in the town. As it happens, The Mayor, agrees with me that the Town Centre Manager should be totally concerned. The Mayor acknowledges the fact that the public transport system has a direct effect on the number of people coming into the town.
I therefore personally conclude that the town manager is more interested in being seen visibly to provide aesthetically pleasing advertisments/logos etc to encourage people into Helston, without really caring how they get there or how much they have to pay to park if coming by car. I will probably take a lot of flak for this comment as well, but personally I felt that the second Portas Pilot video came across as amateurish. Anyway only time will tell, if I am to be proved wrong, but in the meantime I do hope all the windfall money for Helston does not dwindle away before any of the bigger projects that have been mentioned are actually put into effect.

meerkats says...
1:21pm Tue 11 Sep 12

Iwatched the 2nd Portas video and thought it was a load of rubbish .Of course the tcm should be concerned about the bus service ,encouraging people to come into Helston. still think he needs to get real and face all the issues , and listen to people's concerns etc before getting carried away with the logo idea . The windfall will dwindle away ,and at the end of it lets hope there is something good to come from it and something to put Helston back on the map for a great place to visit.

Personally think the town manager is off the mark here. Who does he think a town re branding would influence. Certainly not people who live in the town .They are well aware of our town center limitations. As for attracting people from other towns camborne has the right Idea, We have enjoyed there free parking there already, great for the town and a move we should all support.
Why will no one start to deal with the problems with Helston town center. If people commenting here are able to identify the problems why can not the tcm and the town council.
I believe we will have to wait until town councils elections in may when hopefully people with Ideas and ambition for the town will put themselves forward.
The town needs reorganization not managing, more free parking and increased incentives to use the excellent relief road.
What it certainly does not need is re branding. I hope local people give this nonsense the wide berth it deserves.

THORQUIP havn't you noticed your last post is personal in itself. Expecting value for money, Helston's money, from the town manager is not being personal. There were a lot applicants for the job he has been chosen for remember. ronedgecumbe, the Mayor has got opinions, he agrees transport in and out of the town is important to get people to come and shop in town, which is more than the town manager seems to care about. One thing that should be remembered is the Mayors job is voluntary, the town manager is paid to do his job, a proper wage, and a good one at that.

meerkats, perhaps a notice printed on the wrappers, "please dispose of this wrapper responsibly and help keep Helston tidy" would be a start, also an extra rubbish bin maybe. I do challenge people if I see them drop litter or feed the gulls but then perhaps that is why I get assaulted so often lol, so I don't reccommend it to anyone else.

Gill Zella Martin says...
6:25pm Wed 12 Sep 12

ronedgecumbe said the Mayor does not seem to have an opinion on anything except rubbish bags, well that is not such a bad thing, perhaps the Mayor wants to keep his opinions clean and tidy. Seriously though, keeping Helston clean should all be part of the improvements by the TCM as it all reflects on the town and affects visitors views on returning.

THORQUIP says...
7:43pm Wed 12 Sep 12

Litter is a major problem in Helston. However, I do not countenance challenging litter droppers. You will more than likely be offered or receive physical violence, such is the current mindset. I am no stranger to violence but if I was to react to one of these threatening litter-dropping erks, guess who would be down the Camborne cop-shop? We need to start at the bottom and engender some civic pride in the underclass. How, I don't know, but perhaps the tcm could put this on his agenda and liaise with other towns that seem to have cracked this problem. I remember when Four Lanes installed new bush shelters and planted saplings in the verges. I opined that they would last two weeks at the most (as they would in Helston). They were untouched by vandals. To this day I wonder why. Good material for a social scientist. It is this depth of research that we require from the tcm on his salary. No flash ideas but professional, well-researched and effective measures. His current Blue Peter style measures are mere tosh. For 34 grand a year I want a lot more from this bod. Perhaps there are lessons to be had from the recent civic spirit engendered by the olympics, but that is the tcm's job so get on with it. We want results and for your salary we had better get them or we'll demand you get the order of the boot. So switch on and get real and forget your logos etc. Whilst you waffle the life experience of Helstonians is degraded and property prices drop. We've got a crisis on our hands here and it's time to "carpe diem". Pull your finger out!

meerkats says...
9:36pm Wed 12 Sep 12

omg Gill be careful challenging people. Spar have provided two bins but the problem there is that people who buy from the subway dont eat them outside spar ,so therefore they just eat and drop their rubbish anywhere. its a shame but people just dont care anymore

Gill Zella Martin says...
9:53pm Wed 12 Sep 12

Being a coward I have never reacted with any attempt to retaliate when I have been assaulted, but I cannot stand by and watch anything anti social happen that I do not agree with. I do think people litter more if they think they will not be seen or challenged. THORQUIP, you say you think the TCM could liase with other towns, I think perhaps in person might give a better impression.

meerkats says...
10:37pm Wed 12 Sep 12

i think it would be a good experience for the tcm to visit other towns and see how they have overcome problems and deal with every day things, he may then get an idea or two as how to move things forward with Helston in a more realistic way than logos.

Gill Zella Martin says...
6:57am Thu 13 Sep 12

I don't mean to be negative but I thought the TCM was originally a 'Project manager' or perhaps I read the info incorrectly, surely there is a difference. Someone that organizes a the building of a housing estate could be classed as a project manager. My Dr is very good but it dosn't mean he can go off and be a brain surgeon. (Although in my case it may be useful) It is just that this Logo idea to me seems like a typical 'project' initiative, which is ok if it is in conjuction with other things, but what other things apart from four weeks of markets are definitely planned. Perhaps I am impatient but has anyone actually decided yet what the bulk of the money is to be spent on, particularly if he is planning on getting match funding. They have got an extension on the time limit that the money can be spent within now but what are the definite planned ideas for it ?

telstar1962 says...
8:09am Thu 13 Sep 12

The £800,000.00 was a figure agreed by Tesco and Sainsbury with Cornwall Council when the planning agreements were being finalised as some sort of compensation for Helston Town, because of the known negative effect two bigger Supermarkets would have on trade in the small Market Town.

In any other Trade or Industry, such an arrangement would be known as bribery, corruption or the like.

In terms of the billions, yes billions,of profits these super grocers make, the sum of money awarded to Towns like Helston is an utter insult, and it should not have been accepted.

The effect is that Towns such as Helston need to employ specialists in Marketing,Advertisin
g etc the like of which the Supermarkets have been employing for years

Another competition should be launched for a logo to encourage people not to do all their shopping in these gross Supermarkets

Interesting comments.

I have to say that all these comments, including my own, are going to be made from a position of ignorance.

Non of us know all the facts. We speculate what the problems are with Helston and everyone has different priorities and idea on how a problem should be address.

I did my bachelors degree in Social Science - so I could have hours of philosophical discussion as to why Helston's perceived problems aren't already addressed and sorted.

I emphasis with all the concerned areas mentioned above; parking, rubbish, tcm job description and targets, the toilets, lack of people in the town centre. But ask your self this questions - how many of these concerned are going to be fixed?

My answer is none at the moment!

We have far too many external factors. Cornwall Council should stop dictating from their ivory towers and had power AND MONEY back to the Town & Parish councils (Localism Bill is in place, but it's taking time). Parking, rubbish collection, toilets are controlled by CC.

Lack of people in the town centre? this is a social paradigm shift; most people prefer to do their general shopping in a supermarket. its quick, cheap, easy and efficient? How will Helston compete with that?

There are so many unknown factors at play here.

And the last comment from Meerkats is interesting - yes, read these comment, but this is not a true representation of what people think. There's only about 5-6 different people commenting on here? Out of some 10 thousand inhabitants of Helston.

Although, I would say, the Helston Business Improvement Partnership (HBIP) is really starting to take shape. This was solely instigated by the TCM and two concerned business owners. Now there are some 130 businesses, out of a possible 300 odd in Helston, working together as a collective body to help improve the town centre. The hanging baskets and branding is a start...

Watch this space....

HelstonEagle, it does not really take a College degree to understand the surroundings in which we live.

I agree that most people may prefer to do their general shopping in a supermarket for obvious reasons, but the key to a successful Town shopping area is to attract those people into the Town in addition to their normal weekly shop at Asda etc

How Helston competes with the Supermarkets is also to make it easier, quicker and more efficient than the systems currently in place,to get people into Town. That's what is being discussed on this comment site

Gill Zella Martin says...

HelstonEagle, you make some valid points, however, with reference to there only being a small percentage of the public expressing their views on this site, whilst that may be true, there is nothing to prevent the town manager conducting a full survey asking residents, shoppers and visitors what they would like see in Helston, likewise, there is nothing preventing anyone contacting the TCM or town council to express their views or suggest ideas.

Gill Zella Martin says...
3:18pm Sat 15 Sep 12

If the TCM has a true representation of what the majority of people think would be best for Helston then perhaps he would like to share it with us. I am certainly willing to listen.

Personally I think you can develop as many groups/committees,bu
siness partnerships as you like, but unless you address the issues that the actual people that are going to spend their money in these shops would like to see addressed, then footfall will not increase. With reference to CC control, the responsibility for toilets is to be passed to town councils therefore future consideration to them needs to be planned for. One can advertise/promote with a logo and additionally make a town as pretty as one likes, but if there are no toilets, little free parking and an unreliable bus service then I doubt footfall will increase.
