A newly formed Walk/Run beginners group, based in the Camborne, Pool, Redruth area, will meet for the first time on Monday 17th September 2012 and local people are invited to come along, find out more and join in!
The Camborne, Pool, Redruth (CPR) Walk Run Beginners Group will meet at 7pm each Monday at The Hub Club (based beside the Carn Brea Leisure Centre). Qualified Jog Leaders from the Cornwall Athletic Club will take the group out each week and help both complete beginners and improvers to follow an enjoyable walk/ run schedule.
Cornwall College Camborne are also supporting the group and sponsoring jackets for the Jog Leaders. The college and the athletics club are both keen to encourage participation in sport locally and to work together to help people and communities become more active, healthy and enjoy the outdoors.
The group will be for men and women of all ages and there is no experience needed- plenty of advice will be available on how to start running and what essential kit is needed.
Group Leader Emma Stepto explains, “The most important thing is to come along and have a go- don't tell yourself you can't do it, or feel shy or embarrassed. We all started somewhere and understand what your concerns and questions might be. No-one will get left behind, it is a very gentle introduction to running. The benefits of exercise are huge- not just for your health, but for your self esteem and confidence too- and there really is an amazing community of runners in Cornwall, from Juniors right up to Veterans in their 70's, who genuinely support each other and warmly welcome beginners”
“People joining the group might just want to run occasionally for fitness or might aim to do a local race or even join the athletics club. There is no pressure, because whatever your target, when you reach it, you will have achieved something great. We really look forward to helping local people find out what they are capable of, have fun meeting new people and discover how fantastic it is to run in our beautiful area.”
Russell Lawrence, Corporate Director of Sport and Public Services at Cornwall College is delighted to support the group, saying, “We are extremely keen to be involved with activities in the local community and to encourage sports as a way of improving peoples' lives and opportunities. We have a wide range of sports courses on offer and being able to work closely with a neighbouring athletic club means our students can apply their knowledge and also learn more from the athletes. It will also be a bonus for our staff and students to be able to join the group and improve their own fitness. We look forward to doing much more work with Cornwall AC and wish them the best with the new beginners group.”
The first session is free and then there is a weekly fee of £1, which includes tea and coffee afterwards. The Hub Club provides an ideal secure place to warm up and leave bags and coats. People should check with their GPs before they take on a new exercise regime. High Visibility clothing or straps are advisable but not obligatory and comfortable sports shoes are advised. Under 18's should be accompanied by an adult or carer.
