TWO Falmouth Marine School graduates have landed their dream job – working in the town’s new aquarium.
Daisy Parsons and Jessica Grove, who completed their marine science courses in July, are both working at the aquarium as in-house marine biologists.
Daisy, who studied the Marine Science foundation degree, and Jessica, who studied the Marine Biology and Ecology BTEC extended National Diploma programmes, said they were both enjoying their work at the Church Street attraction.
Jessica, 19, who relocated from Worcester for her college course said: “I’m really enjoying working at the aquarium, especially as it’s a new business starting from the beginning in terms of developing environments for marine species.
“I work there two days a week and the rest of the week I work at Cornwall Seal Sanctuary, where I completed my work experience during my course. “I can’t praise the tutors at the college enough, they really know their stuff and they ensure that you know yours, which has enabled me to secure my dream jobs .”
Daisy, 27, said: “It will be great for the students to work here and get some hands-on experience. The aquatic centre at the college is excellent and includes marine species such as sharks, corals, seahorses, piranhas and octopus, the advantage of them being here will be to develop their aquatic skills in terms of maintaining water quality and developing displays at exhibition standard as well as engaging with the public.
“The aquaculture module I completed during my degree developed my understanding of coral reef issues, which has really prepared me for this role, so that twinned with the hands on application at the aquarium will enhance the student experience and their skill set.”
Falmouth Marine School has also developed a partnership agreement with the Aquarium to enable current students to gain first-hand experience of the aquaculture element of their course and for the aquarium to access the staff expertise at the college.
