FALMOUTH’S latest festival got off to a spectacular start last weekend with a 100ft banner containing more than 30 pieces of art unveiled in the town centre.
The SPLASH Big Art Project banner runs alongside Grove Place, and displays works by a variety of artists who have either lived, worked or been inspired by Falmouth.
Those featured include Henry Tuke, William Ayerst Ingram, Grace Gardener and John Dyer who are all featured alongside schoolchildren and emerging talent from the University College Falmouth The banner was created especially for the SPLASH 2012 festival, which celebrates Falmouth’s creative heritage. It began on Friday, and has already featured talks by authors including Emily Barr, Katie Fforde, Michael Foreman and Michael Morpurgo.
There will also be performances across the town this week, special film showings and fantastic exhibitions.
Richard Wilcox, manager of Falmouth BID, has been organising the event.
He said: “I’m delighted to unveil the Bid Art Project Banner as part of SPLASH 2012. “Falmouth has such a strong artistic pedigree and SPLASH 2012 is really about exploring and celebrating that fact in as many innovative and original ways as we can.
“The banner also provides a surprising, head-turning visual enhancement to residents and visitors walking along Grove Place. “I’d like to single out the efforts of Jacqui Owen who helped me greatly in curating the artwork you see on display as well as the University College Falmouth, artist John Dyer and Louise Connell from Falmouth Art Gallery for their support.”
Full programme can be viewed online at www.falmouth.co.uk or SPLASH guides picked up from various town outlets including the Visitor Information Centre, The Poly, Falmouth Art Gallery and Maritime Museum *For a guide to this week’s SPLASH 2012 events, please see our Weekender entertainment guide.
