Cornish Wrasslin’ Tournament on Truro’s Cathedral Green
9:37am Thursday 13th September 2012 in News
THE annual Cornish Wrasslin’ Tournament will take place on Truro’s Cathedral Green from 10.30am on Saturday, September 15. The 2012 tournament includes junior classes and an open competition.
The event, sponsored by Truro Glass Centre, is being organised by Truro Old Cornwall Society.
Historian Christine Parnell, the society’s secretary, said: “Truro has been a centre for wrasslin’ for centuries. The tournament has become part of the city’s regular calendar. We very much welcome the competitions that feature young people. They are an introduction to their rich heritage and an excellent way to keep fit, and often get muddy. Recently, as the society’s recorder, we have acquired a small group of wrasslin’ photographs from about the 1930s.
“This is an important part of our work, ‘gathering the fragments’ and this has been an exciting addition to our collection.”
The Truro Cornish Wrasslin’ Tournament is staged with the permission of Truro Cathedral and the support of Truro City Council. Truro Old Cornwall society meets on Tuesdays and undertakes visits to places of interest during the summer months. Anyone requiring further information about the society should contact 01872 242464 or 241146.
